Much like the chill in the springtime breeze, the cold shoulder doesn’t leave many feeling warm and fuzzy. Quite the contrary in terms of the expressions origins.
The cold shoulder.
The origin of this expression which is often repeated is that visitors to a house who were welcome were given a hot meal but those who weren’t were offered only ‘cold shoulder of mutton’. This is repeated in several etymological texts, including Hendrickson’s usually reliable ‘Encyclopedia of Word and Phrase Origins’.
The bold shoulder.
The origin of this expression has been flying around lately with all of the spring and summer fashion trends are inclusive to many shirts and dresses that are off the shoulder. I’m a huge fan. Not only is it a fun fashion statement, it shows off parts of the most vulnerable parts of your body, your décolletage, which is a bold move and requires you to push yourself out there. If you’re an introvert living an extroverted life like me, you’ll know this can sometimes take a quick pep talk. So give them the bold shoulder and a pep talk if necessary. It’s a seasonal style that you’ll love!
