Have you noticed that the more time we spend on our devices the more less connected we are?
All of this Pokemon craze and social talks with an absence of substance makes me want to retreat into my shell.
Instead of staying in the rut of wondering impossible answers about how to fix the social situations. I took some time this afternoon to spend with a lady from another time and her daughter … My 90-year-old wartime bride was brought to the states from Germany after WWII.
Everything about her alerted my senses. Her accent (audioception), poise (ophthalmoception), perfume (olfacoception), skin (tactioception), and the pistachio macaroon (tactioception) that her daughter gave me, reminded me of my father’s mother that was of similar circumstances.
Different accent but familiar in every other sense. It draws me in and gave me a sense of comfort that’s unable to be given by anyone else.
I must confess that I’m also in complete admiration of her 90 years on earth. It carries an intense amount of knowledge from experience and observation that’s carried into perspective that translates as knowledge that cannot be defined.
It reminds me of a quote that I can’t locate but is about the fulfillment and richness we receive from spending time with older generations.
These interactions allow us to share concepts, commonalities, and even possessions with one another.
Looking at pictures from her life and seeing her record collection was an indication of the time she’s in. My time is here, it’s an easier observation as its present day … I say this as I remember my phone notifications making their sounds as we sat there because I forgot to turn them off but she was kind enough to not mention it.
I read a study about younger generations spending time with the elderly could bring them a sense of excitement from seeing the world through younger eyes can change their view and make them want to be more involved in the world as we share it in all of its glory and strangeness; which will help them to reduce depression, relieve boredom, and improve health through their wellbeing.
To say the least, I’m hopeful for our second date.
