Travel Tuesday: Wandering and Wondering with Purpose

08.07.18 | Life

Wanderlusting is a common and often overlooked topic that we all just wanna take that perfect photo for your social media and not absorb it.

Trevi Fountain

I’ve had the privilege to visit Italy three times. The first time was jarring as we attempted to see everything we possibly could in a limited time. The second time was leisurely and slowed down as we knew where we wanted to go and learn more to live locally The third was with the kids and a unique mixed bag all together. It was fast, education, and beautiful to share.

Something I’m still chewing on is how tourism can become an engine for careless waste, destruction, and arrogance.

The streets are full of sellers, smugglers, and various people across all genres stopping to take a Boomerang in The Colosseum where lives were brutally lost for entertainment.

Tourism could be a larger vehicle for supporting local crafts, local traditions, for listening and learning. The negative historical aspect of every ancient city carries pain but it’s not to be celebrated.

Celebrate the beauty in a city.

The history can be shared with out selfie sticks. It’s not about us, arrogant peeps, it’s about listening, absorbing, and living with those lessons.

Find hope: This beautiful fountain carries the tradition of the past into today. Romans tell you that if you throw a coin in Trevi Fountain, it’s said to ensure the comeback to Rome, two coins thrown is a wish for romance, and three coins thrown ensures the marriage with that person.

This is why we travel. To learn of love, hope, and how cities lived in the past to make life better today. You take that as your souvenir.

I love, love. Don’t you?
