Definition of Beauty:
“Beauty” is such a strange word. Not even the internet knows what it truly means. A simple search on Google provides you with the definition “a combination of qualities, such as shape, color, or form, that pleases the aesthetic senses, especially the sight.” However if you look up the meaning of the word, derived from the Latin “bellus” (meaning “beautiful” – no shocker there) in the Merriam-Webster dictionary you’ll get the more blunt answers “the quality of being physically attractive” and “a beautiful woman.”
Beauty can mean a lot of things. To me it could be a pretty girl, a well tailored suit, having just the right light in a photograph or even a meal so well prepared that you would trade your sanity for one more bite.
On Sept. 11, 2011 (a fitting day to release an explosion of awful sounds) the song “What Makes You Beautiful” was released by Brit-boy-band One Direction. In the song the guys try to tell their teenage fangirls that they love you because you don’t know you’re beautiful, but that’s what makes you beautiful, but they don’t love beautiful things that know they’re beautiful but they want you to know you’re beautiful. A concept more confusing and flawed than Phillip J. Fry from “Futurama” becoming his own grandfather by time-traveling back and accidentally impregnating his own grandmother because he thought she was beautiful. Oops.
But you know what? Not everyone is beautiful – and that’s okay. You don’t have to be beautiful to be a good person. Not everyone deserves the participation trophy of life in the form of Instagram comments or Tumblr posts letting them know they’re beautiful. Sometimes it’s okay to just be.
So I guess that the simple answer to Bella’s question of “what is your definition of beauty?” is just that. Be a good person and don’t expect a reward for it. Help your fellow man. Recycle. Tip well. Let a stranger over in traffic. Do something you don’t want to do for someone else because you know it will mean something to them.
And remember, “that’s what makes you beautiful!”
